Sports corner: volleyball bunt.
By Julia Kudewicz and Olivia Santos
Bump! Set! Spike! The Washington Wildcats played a great season. Everyone worked hard to sharpen their skills, and a lot of improvement was seen. The Girls' Volleyball Team's head coach is Mrs. Coon.
Mrs. Coon began playing volleyball in 7th grade when Washington Middle School first opened. At Washington her position was usually the setter. She played at Maloney High School as well. Mrs. Coon decided to start coaching to share her love of the game and keep the volleyball tradition alive. One of the hardest parts of coaching for Mrs. Coon is keeping the girls' spirits high and keeping them motivated. Also, the team was going "up and down" with their performance, which made coaching difficult. Watching her players grow from the very beginning of the volleyball season to the end is Mrs. Coon's favorite part about volleyball.
Team captains Emily Coleman and Hailey Matias started playing volleyball around 6th grade. Emily likes to be in the position of a setter, while Hailey enjoys playing the back middle position. Emily says their responsibilities as captains are keeping the team under control, being leaders, and when Mrs. Coon is busy, they take her place. "I make sure nobody gets down on themselves and try to be a role model." Hailey said. She will be playing volleyball next year in high school, but Emily cannot because she will be swimming.
Mrs. Coon says the most important skills someone needs to play volleyball are aggressiveness and heart. The girls will miss playing volleyball, but had a fun season. Congratulations to all of the Washington Middle School volleyball players of 2012!
